Terms and Conditions
1. Who we are
Learn to Lipread is a sole trader business run by Anastasia Osborne.
Business address: Unit 171772, PO Box 7169, Poole, BH15 9EL
Email: hello@learn-to-lipread.co.uk
Website: learn-to-lipread.co.uk
These Terms of Service apply when you book a course or other service with Learn to Lipread. They explain what you can expect from us and what we ask of you.
By placing a booking, you agree to these Terms of Service.
2. What you are booking
When you book a course, you are booking a programme of online lipreading classes delivered via Zoom, together with one face-to-face guided meetup included as part of the course.
A teacher may attend the meetup, but teacher attendance is not guaranteed. The meetup is primarily an organised opportunity for students to practise and connect rather than an additional taught lesson.
The meetup is included in the course price. If you choose not to attend, there is no reduction or refund of the course fee.
3. Booking and payment
You book a course by choosing a course on our website and paying through Stripe, our payment provider. We do not receive or store your full card payment details.
Prices are shown on the relevant course page. If an early-bird or launch price is offered, the course page will state the date by which you need to book to receive that price. After that date, the standard course price will apply.
4. Cancelling your booking
Your 14-day cancellation right
When you book a course online, you normally have the right to cancel your booking within 14 days of entering into the contract and receive a refund.
Because our courses can be booked as little as two days before they start, you may ask us to begin providing the course during this 14-day cancellation period.
If you ask us to start the course during the 14-day period and then cancel, you may be charged for the part of the course that has already been provided, calculated proportionately according to the amount of the course delivered before you cancelled.
We will ask you to confirm that you want the course to start during the 14-day cancellation period when you book.
To cancel, email us at hello@learn-to-lipread.co.uk.
After the 14-day cancellation period
After the 14-day cancellation period has ended, we do not normally offer refunds for cancellations. However, if your circumstances change, we will do our best to transfer your place to another available course.
Missed lessons
We cannot provide a refund for individual lessons that you choose not to attend.
If you miss a class, you are welcome to join another class running that same week where space allows. Your teacher will also provide the materials from the session you missed.
5. If a course does not run
Courses need a minimum of six students to go ahead. If enrolment does not reach this level, we will contact you as soon as possible and, where possible, at least one week before the course begins.
We will offer you one of the following options:
- a place on another suitable course;
- a place on the waiting list for a course starting in the near future; or
- a full refund of the course fee.
Sometimes circumstances outside our reasonable control mean that we cannot run a course or an individual lesson as planned. If this happens, we will contact you as soon as reasonably possible.
If we need to rearrange a lesson, we will offer you a replacement session. If you cannot attend the replacement session, we will do our best to offer you another suitable alternative. Where we are unable to provide the lesson as agreed, you may be entitled to a refund or other remedy under your statutory rights.
If we need to cancel a course completely, we will offer you an alternative course or a full refund of the course fee.
We will make reasonable efforts to give you as much notice as possible of any cancellation or change.
6. What we expect from you
Please treat your teacher and fellow students with courtesy and respect.
What is shared in class should be treated as confidential. Students may speak openly about their hearing loss and personal circumstances, and everyone should be able to feel safe doing so.
Please do not record classes, photograph other students, or share anything from a class without the agreement of the people involved.
Family members, friends and supporters: We welcome family members, friends and supporters because they can provide valuable support to people who are deaf or hard of hearing. We are currently considering how best to offer supporter places while ensuring confidentiality and making sure that all students can see each other’s faces and lips clearly. Our arrangements for supporter places will be confirmed before launch.
We may ask someone to leave a course if their behaviour makes the class unsafe, disruptive or uncomfortable for others. We will normally try to resolve concerns by talking to the person first.
7. What you need
You will need a desktop computer, laptop or tablet with a working camera and microphone, and a reliable internet connection.
We use Zoom for our online classes. Zoom is free to join and you do not need a Zoom account to attend.
8. Learning outcomes and individual progress
Lipreading is a skill that develops differently for everyone. Your progress will depend on factors including your hearing, previous experience, concentration, practice and individual circumstances.
We cannot guarantee a particular level of improvement or a specific outcome from taking a course.
Our aim is to give you practical skills, information, strategies and opportunities to practise so that you can develop your confidence and ability over time.
9. Our responsibility to you
We will provide our courses with reasonable care and skill.
We are not responsible for problems caused by your own equipment or internet connection, or for circumstances outside our reasonable control.
Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes any liability that cannot legally be limited or excluded, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or your statutory rights as a consumer.
If we are unable to provide a lesson as agreed, we will make reasonable efforts to arrange a replacement session or another suitable alternative. Where we are unable to provide the service you have paid for, you may be entitled to a refund or other remedy under your statutory rights.
10. Local meetups
A guided meetup is included as part of your course. It gives you an opportunity to practise skills from the course in a real-world setting and to meet and connect with other people with hearing loss.
Meetups take place at public venues. You are responsible for arranging and paying for your own travel to and from the venue.
The teacher may attend the meetup, but teacher attendance is not guaranteed. The meetups are organised opportunities for students to practise and connect rather than additional taught lessons.
Choosing the venue
Because Learn to Lipread is building a community and is initially operating across a number of areas, a meetup described as “local” may sometimes be regional rather than close to your home.
If you choose to attend a course outside your local area, you understand that the associated meetup may not be within a convenient travelling distance for you.
Attending the meetup
You do not have to attend the meetup. If you choose not to attend, there is no reduction or refund of the course fee.
If you are unable to attend, please let your teacher know in advance so that the venue can be informed and appropriate arrangements can be made.
We will do our best to provide meetups that are suitable for lipreaders, but we cannot control the management, staff or other customers at a public venue.
If a meetup needs to be changed or rearranged, we will make reasonable efforts to provide a suitable alternative. Your statutory rights are not affected.
11. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms of Service from time to time.
The version that applies to your booking is the version that was available when you made your booking.
Any changes will apply to future bookings and will not change the terms that applied to a booking you have already made.
12. If something goes wrong
If you have a problem with your course, booking or meetup, please contact us at hello@learn-to-lipread.co.uk as soon as possible.
We will listen to your concerns and do our best to resolve the problem fairly and promptly.
If you are unhappy with any aspect of our service, please give us the opportunity to put things right before pursuing other remedies.
Nothing in these Terms affects your statutory rights as a consumer.
